Hsieh Su-wei emerges winner of the 2016 Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge at the Habtoor Grand Resort, Autograph Collection in mid- December.
The Chinese Taipei player ended the year with her first singles title in over 13 months after defeating 19-year-old Russia’s Natalia Vikhlyantseva.
Hsieh, who has been plagued with ankle injuries in the second half of the year, claimed the ITF $100,000 title after defeating the Russian teenager 6-2, 6-2 in a match lasting 59 minutes.
Less than an hour later Hseih, a 2013 Wimbledon and 2014 French open doubles champion, went on to play in the doubles final with teammate Valeria Savinykh of Russia. However, they were defeated 6-3, 3-6, 10-4 by Nina Stojanovic and Mandy Minella.
The Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge, now in its 19th year, was founded by Al Habtoor Group Founding Chairman Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor to promote women’s tennis in the UAE.
